The idea is to build gigantic underground tubes that are as thick as a truck, and can move underground at 60 miles an hour.

They are powered by air pressure or linear induction motors, and they are essentially big pneumatic tubes, like the type in old office buildings. I always wondered what happened to that system of communication. I remember it being out-of-date before the age of email.

Anyway, Foodtubes states that food transport is a very wasteful system, with trucks spending 92 percent of fuel just hauling their own weight, as well as increasing our carbon footprint. Foodtubes says that there is more to establishing this system than just laying tracks. Listen to what they had to say about the freight industry “man”:

The freight industry is deeply entrenched at every level of government and commerce. . . they claim rights to profit from dominating our roads, shaking our buildings and polluting our air. Many traditional politicians and food bosses are oil-junkies, dedicated to keeping things as they are–whatever the social costs.

Apparently, Foodtubes intend to test this out on a five mile above-ground test circuit, and then create a track for the entire UK.

   Sometimes the aftermath of a natural disaster is just as bad as the disaster itself, as the rescue teams on the ground can face a stiff challenge when it comes to communicating with the outside world and one another. Of course, our favorite problem solvers are here to help: tiny flying robots.

The project comes from Swiss-based lab EPFL, and involves a swarm of micro air vehicles that will fly over a disaster site in a holding pattern. The flying 'bots themselves will act as an ad hoc network, allowing rescue workers to use their phones and computers and the like.

The best part of it all could be how easy the SMAVNET — or Swarming Micro Air Vehicle Network — is to set up. To take off, all they need is one person to chuck them into the air, and they're light enough that several can be carried at once. When the project is done, the swarm lands, making it as mobile as rescue workers need to be.

Said technologies need to be pushed forward a good bit, but if it all pans out, the result could lead to more efficient commuter rail systems, better batteries for motorcars and roller coasters that force a waiver upon you prior to riding. The proposal details a "wedge-shaped aircraft with scramjets to be launched horizontally on an electrified track or gas-powered sled," and once launched, the craft would soar at Mach 10 in order to breach the atmosphere and allow a rocket's second stage to fire. It's pretty riveting stuff -- we'd recommend giving that source link a look for the full skinny, but not if you're hoping to see this materialize in the next decade score.

The sources also report that none other than Andy Rubin is at the head of the charge to get Google Music off the rack, and into the hands of consumers all over the world.

    A giant clock in the Muslim holy city of Mecca start to tick Wednesday on the first day of the fasting month of Ramadan as Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is testing the edifice with which it aims to set a new time standard.

    The Royal Clock, designed by German Premiere Composite Technologies company, is sitting atop a skyscraper just 50 meters of the Grand Mosque in the city. The clock was designed to be the world's largest - six times larger than London's Big Ben.

The four-faced clock project will be fully operational after a three-month trial period, official SPA news agency reported.

According to Arab News newspaper, the clock is placed at a height of 380 meters and could be visible from 17 km away at night and 11-12 km away during the day.

The name of Allah (God in Arabic) has been inscribed on each of the four clock faces.

The 577-meter Mecca Clock Royal Tower will also feature a lunar observation center and an Islamic museum as well as a luxurious 76- storey hotel.
