Toshiba announces Exceria line of high-speed SD cards

Toshiba has announced new SDXC and SDHC cards that support the UHS-1 high-speed interface--and the new Exceria brand name to go along with them.

The Exceria name is meant "to reflect a combination of 'excellent' and 'experience,'" Toshiba said in a statement this week, but I wouldn't have guessed that without being told. Too bad Sony got there first with Xperia.

The new cards come in three varieties. At the top of the heap are models that will arrive in July with read speeds of 95MBps and write speeds of 90MBps; they'll come in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB sizes.

In the middle of the pack are 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models arriving in August. They read at the same rates but are slower at writing at 60MBps.

Finally come models with 90MBps read speeds and 30MBps write speeds. The 8GB and 16GB are scheduled to arrive in April and the 32GB model in May.

Toshiba, which is a major power in flash memory manufacturing, didn't announce prices.

   Imagine a world where you no longer have to go grocery shopping. Instead, a company called Foodtubes brings the groceries to you!

The idea is to build gigantic underground tubes that are as thick as a truck, and can move underground at 60 miles an hour.

They are powered by air pressure or linear induction motors, and they are essentially big pneumatic tubes, like the type in old office buildings. I always wondered what happened to that system of communication. I remember it being out-of-date before the age of email.

Anyway, Foodtubes states that food transport is a very wasteful system, with trucks spending 92 percent of fuel just hauling their own weight, as well as increasing our carbon footprint. Foodtubes says that there is more to establishing this system than just laying tracks. Listen to what they had to say about the freight industry “man”:

   Sometimes the aftermath of a natural disaster is just as bad as the disaster itself, as the rescue teams on the ground can face a stiff challenge when it comes to communicating with the outside world and one another. Of course, our favorite problem solvers are here to help: tiny flying robots.

The project comes from Swiss-based lab EPFL, and involves a swarm of micro air vehicles that will fly over a disaster site in a holding pattern. The flying 'bots themselves will act as an ad hoc network, allowing rescue workers to use their phones and computers and the like.

The best part of it all could be how easy the SMAVNET — or Swarming Micro Air Vehicle Network — is to set up. To take off, all they need is one person to chuck them into the air, and they're light enough that several can be carried at once. When the project is done, the swarm lands, making it as mobile as rescue workers need to be.

The proposal details a "wedge-shaped aircraft with scramjets to be launched horizontally on an electrified track or gas-powered sled," and once launched, the craft would soar at Mach 10 in order to breach the atmosphere and allow a rocket's second stage to fire. It's pretty riveting stuff -- we'd recommend giving that source link a look for the full skinny, but not if you're hoping to see this materialize in the next decade score.
