How to Save Hard Disk Space Tips for disk space
Hard disk space in your computer is something that is never enough. As long as there is space, you have something to fill it up. Especially in laptops you can't even add another hard disk to increase the space. Yes, you can attach an external hard drive to get additional space. It is certainly not as convenient as internal drive. So, best way to workaround the problem is to create more space in your hard disk my doing some routine maintenance. Here are some steps to save hard disk space in your computer.
Instructions:-
- Do disk cleanup. Built in disk clean up in windows provides several ways to save hard disk space. Right click on the drive letter in windows explorer and select "Properties" menu. The disk cleanup button is in the "General" tab.
- Delete temporary files. Through disk cleanup utility you can delete all the temporary files downloaded to the computer when you browse different web pages. Sometimes these could add up to eat a lot of space. Delete these files to create some free capacity in the hard disk.
- Empty the Recycle Bin. Recycle bin contains the deleted files, in case if you wish to restore them later. You can right click on the recycle bin and click on "Empty Recycle Bin" to save some hard disk storage. Alternatively you can do this through disk cleanup utility too.
- Compress old files. Windows can compress the files that are not accessed for a while. You can instruct Windows to do so from the disk cleanup page described in Step 1. Compressing the files will save good amount of hard disk space in the computer.
- Uninstall unwanted programs. Time to time we end up installing various software and never use them after. These could consume lot of hard disk space. By uninstalling them, you can save space in the hard disk.
- Delete downloaded installation files. Once you install a program you don't need the installation files downloaded from the Internet. Some of them could be large files. You can save hard disk space on the computer by deleting such files after installation.
- Compress Hard disk. This is different from compressing old files. This option will compress entire hard drive storage and save you significant hard disk space. In order to compress the hard drive, right click on the drive letter in windows explorer and click on the check box "Compress drive to save disk space".
